Module 2.1 Sleep

Sleep is one of the most unappreciated and valuable tools that you will ever put into your mental health toolkit. In my experience, most of the time I see clients who are having difficulty maintain their mental and physical wellness, they are also experiencing difficulties with their sleep. If there is one thing that you can do to improve you mental and physical health massively right now, it is getting a good nights rest.

Many of us have a preconception that we can not sleep well and dread the though of going to bed because it means hours of sleepless nights and mentally spiralling into the nocturnal abyss. Some people wake because of nightmares, bathroom breaks, pain, restless legs, sleep apnoea, emotional turmoil and a mirid of other reasons. I am sure that you can make a very large list of reasons why you can’t get to sleep but did you know that your thoughts and ideas that you can’t sleep massively impact your ability to get to sleep!

If we constantly tell ourselves that we are not able to sleep that is what we are giving emphasis too – and what you give emphasis to becomes your reality. Sleepless is one of the biggest health problems across the world and millions of people struggle to fall asleep, stay asleep, or wake up still tired no mater how much sleep that they get.

Research shows that if you are not sleeping well it increases the risk of depression, anxiety and a whole heap of other health conditions. A healthy sleep schedule helps you avoid risks to your heart, body and mind, if there is one thing that I constantly bang on about in my clinic, it is the importance of sleep!

Sleep is one of the first things that I look at in my clinic room when people are presenting with a lack of vitality and motivation in life. When we are out of sync with our bodies our mental health really takes a solid whack. The first steps in recovery are taking deeper care of our bodies and being more in tune with the way we live.

Have you ever heard about the old wives tale about how one hour of sleep before midnight equals two after midnight? Well as it turns out the old wives were referring to something called Circadian Rhythms.

Ask any farmer and they will tell you that nature has different rhythms and cycles - if you work against them your crops will not grow and your animals will not thrive. When you work with the cycles of nature your crop is given the best chance to grow. As we are also a part of nature, humans are no different.

You should know that no matter you situation, no matter what is going on for you, improved sleep quality is possible.

Over the next two weeks we will be focusing on improving your quality of sleep but know that none of this will work if you are not prepared to change your situation. This program requires you to do the actual work and put in the dedication to yourself to improve your life. These are evidence-based techniques that have supported thousands of people to improve their mental health, but they will not do the work for you. Your commitment and dedication to yourself and re-connecting to your body is what will change your life.
